A good copy. A semiautobiographical bildungsroman, Look Homeward, Angel is Wolfe's first published novel. It tells the story of Eugene Gant, a young man from a small town with an intense sense of wanderlust and a burning desire to find intellectual fulfilment. Wolfe, who was also from a small-town and filled with ambitious dreams as a child, poured much of his own experiences into the novel; as he explains in his prefatory note, "We are the sum of all the moments of our lives- all that is ours is in them: we cannot escape or conceal it. If the writer has used the clay of life to make his book, he has only used what all men must, what none can keep from using. Fiction is not fact, but fiction is fact selected and understood, fiction is fact arranged and changed with a purpose." Look Homeward, Angel was an immediate commercial and critical success, garnering much attention for the young writer. Notably, this novel takes its title from John Milton's poem "Lycidas" and was adapted into a play of the same name by Ketti Fring in 1957.
