Description
Rare Rookwood Standard glaze vase with applied metal done in 1898 by Kataro Shirayamadani. The metal is in the form of a rough wall on which a small frog is climbing. Bluish-green swirls in the lower portion indicate the presence of water. This was Rookwood doing applied metal with the clay first carved in three dimensions and the copper added by electroplating. Marks include the company logo, which indicates the date Special shape S 1394 and Shirayamadani's incised cypher. Height 8 1/4 inches. There are two areas where the copper failed to cover the clay and there has been some restoration to a small rim chip. Listed in Burt simply as "Shiry...modeled." Purchased in England a few years back. Probably sold during the Paris Exposition of 1900.
