Item Details
Description
Clark Gable's Signed Contract for Gone With The Wind Between Selznick International & MGM W/MGM Accounting Documents, 1930s Studio-Issued Souvenir Photo & PSA DNA Authentication - This incredible piece of motion picture memorabilia is a contract between Metro Goldwyn Mayer/Loew's Incorporated and Selznick International Pictures for the infamous historical romance film adapted from Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel of the same name, "Gone With The Wind." The document is printed on MGM letterhead, is signed by Loew's Incorporated vice president at the conclusion and signed as Approved and Accepted by actor Clark Gable underneath. The contract references an "agreement dated August 25, 1938" in which MGM agreed to loan the services of Clark Gable to Selznick International for the role of "Rhett Butler", and was created to notify the production company of Gable's estimated date of completion of his services in the MGM film "Idiot's Delight". Casting for "Gone With The Wind" took two years, and Selznick wanted Clark Gable from the start, but he was under contract to MGM which never loaned him to other studios. Selznick finally struck an unprecedented deal with MGM, who agreed to provide Gable and $1,250,000 for half of the film's budget and in return Selznick would have to pay Gable's weekly salary, give half the profits to MGM and allow MGM's parent company Loew's, Inc. to release the film. This is truly an iconic piece of history, as Gone With the Wind would have never been possible without this document. This signed contract has been authenticated by PSA DNA and will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity with tamper-evident hologram. The lot will also include a 1930s studio-issued souvenir photograph of Gable with facsimile printed signature and PSA DNA letter of authenticity, along with three original accounting documents for Gable's role in the film.
