This lot consists of a HAND PAINTED gouache painting on paper, Hand Signed "Andy Warhol" in ink at bottom left. Image portrays a Pop Art version of the American actress, Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962). The subject matter and punchy colors of this piece are quintessential to the Pop Art movement's preoccupation with both mass culture and graphic design. Done on a piece of stationary bearing the name of famed New York nightclub, Studio 54, a place frequented by Warhol and many other celebrities/artists. During the 1960s, death emerged as a distinctive theme within the artwork of Andy Warhol. His attention naturally focused on Monroe, perhaps the single-most famous (and ill-fated) pop star of the modern era. This piece is a prime example of the Pop Art style of Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987). Unframed piece measures approximately 8.25" x 12.25".
