Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. An ancient bronze oil lamp with a lunar crescent at the rear, above the loop handle, the main form comprised of a round body with an extended spout, upon a raised foot marked with concentric circles. The crescent moon is associated with Luna, the divine embodiment of the moon usually depicted in Roman art paired with the Sun and driving a four-horse chariot known as a quadriga. Lunar motifs are also linked with the Roman goddesses Diana and Juno. Oil lamps such as these would be filled with olive oil, have a wick placed inside of them, and used to light homes, shops, holy places, and many other places in the Roman world. A stunning example with beautiful green patina. Size: 4" L x 2.2" W x 1.75" H (10.2 cm x 5.6 cm x 4.4 cm)
