Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $150**

Europe, ca. 17th century CE. A group of four iron keys, each with a large loop and thick shaft; three have bits with notches that actually serve as the locking mechanism. After the fall of the Roman Empire, locks and keys remained basically unchanged for 1500 years - locksmiths created painstakingly ornate, often beautiful keys like this one. Women of elite and middle class households were "keepers of the keys", often wearing a ring of keys on their belts. Size of largest: 3.45" L (8.8 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
