Cristoforo Colombo, sistership of Andrea Doria, was a a beautifully proportioned ocean liner, the finest Italy could produce, even in a land of superb artists. Now you can get this beautiful Cristoforo Colombo model for your home or office. At first, our master craftsmen handcraft this model from scratch using plank-on-frame construction method which similar to the building of the actual ship. Furthermore, we build the model to exact scale from finest woods and materials. Thanks to the extensive research of drawings, original plans, as well as actual photographs we are able to build the model to the highest possible accuracy.
Each model requires extensively hundreds of hours to construct and must go through a demanding quality control process before leaving the workshop. Cristoforo Colombo ship model is mounted on a solid wood base and ready to display. It’ll make a perfect gift for home or office decorator, boat enthusiast, or passionate collector.
The origins of the Cristoforo Colombo lie in the situation of the Italian Line at the end of World War II. The war had been devastating to them, as two of their newest and largest ships – the SS Rex and SS Conte di Savoia – had been destroyed. As a result, the Italian Line decided to build only moderately-sized ships that were very luxurious, comfortable, and stylish.
Ansaldo Shipyards, Genoa built and launched Cristoforo Colombo in 1953. She was ready for a 1954 maiden voyage. When launched, the Cristoforo Colombo was larger than the Andrea Doria. Hence, the ship was the largest merchant ship in Italian service
