Naval Aviation: Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Essex (CV-9) Ashtray Directly From The Armstrong Family Collectionâ„¢, Certified by Collectibles Authentication Guaranty with Photo Certificate. A white metal 5.25" diameter x 1.25" tall ashtray with cast text on top reading: "USS ESSEX CV9/ Converted PSNS [Puget Sound Naval Shipyard] 1949-51". The Essex participated in several World War II operations before being decommissioned and modernized for use in the Korean War, 1951-1953. She was the main vessel on which Armstrong served. Interestingly, the Essex was the recovery ship for the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 7. Light wear from apparent use as an ashtray, very fine. This lot will include an encapsulated CAG Photo Certificate with a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
