Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. An intriguing mold-formed composite faience amulet in the form of a mummified ram in a recumbent pose on an integral rectangular plinth. The animal lays with extended legs in front of a naturalistic ram head replete with almond eyes, relaxed ears, a rounded snout with delineated nostrils, and a pair of large, curving horns resting atop the lappets of a tripartite wig. A small trifurcated suspension loop is situated just behind the head and allows the piece to be worn as a pendant. Depictions of mummified rams were important as sacrificial offerings to the ram-headed deity Khnum, one of the creator gods who is aptly associated with fertility and virility. Size: 2.125" L x 0.7" W x 1" H (5.4 cm x 1.8 cm x 2.5 cm).
