Description
"Gabby Gaffer", by May Justus, illustrated by Carrie Dudley, published by P.F. Joliet Volland Company, New York and London, 1929.
A wonderfully illustrated book.
It is a Marvelous Christmas Tale, with a Magical ending -- you'd expect no less from a Leprechaun who comes to Unlucky Village"...by No Road At All"
May Justus (1898-1989), writer teacher, and activist in her native region of rural Appalachia. Her books were read all around the continent through much of the twentieth century. And they are still enjoyable and heartwarming books to read today.
"If my own stories and books have a lasting value it is, I hope, in the field of regional literature. For in this field may (be) preserved the history of a people to whom I belong, with whom I am glad to claim kin as a Tennessee Mountaineer" (May Justus, quoted in Burns and Hines, 1964).
Del Rio, Tennessee, gave her a beautiful backdrop to create her stories. Writing children's books, dealing primarily with the lore of the Smokey Mountains in 1927. Justus later went on to teaching handicapped children in her own home. Never stopping her writing career, Justus received numerous awards for her tall tales. "She received the Julia Ellsworth Ford prize in 1935 for her story "Gabby Gaffer's New Shoes" "(Kinsman 320). In 1936, she received the Boys' Club Award for "Near Side Far". She again received the award in 1950 for "Lucy for Little Lihu"
