Description
9th-11th century AD. A mixed group of iron horse fittings comprising: two stirrups each with a lozenge-section C-shaped body, concave foot plate, pierced tab above; a snaffle bit with lateral bars and harness rings, each bar with a slotted flange below. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, plates 26, 35. 1 kg total, stirrup: 19cm (7 1/2"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. [3, No Reserve]
