Item Details
Description
CN-1C CROWN PRESSED OPEN SALT, bottle green, crude pressing with very thick base, raised on four scrolled feet. Very rare. New England area. 1830-1845. 2 1/8" H, 1 7/8" x 3 1/8".
Near proof, one upper scroll with chip to outer edge, one foot with chipping to interior, not affecting the profile, otherwise just some light mold roughness.
Literature: Neal - Pressed Glass Salt Dishes of the Lacy Period, p. 49. Spillman - Corning, p. 178, fig. 668, and color Plate Eight. Parallels Barlow/Kaiser - The Glass Industry in Sandwich, Vol. 1, p. 284, fig. 1455.
Provenance: Collection of the late Alvina Breckel of Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL._x000D_
Jim Babcock, Oconomowoc, WI, 7/8/89.
Catalogue Note: This is the first example of this salt we have sold, suggesting it is much rarer than designated by Neal. Other than the JY and NE series of lacy-period salts, examples produced using low quality bottle glass are seldom encountered.
Condition
Near proof, one upper scroll with chip to outer edge, one foot with chipping to interior, not affecting the profile, otherwise just some light mold roughness.
