Description
**Originally Listed At $1000**
Europe, probably England or France, ca. early 19th century CE. A gorgeous ceremonial sword with a narrow, straight steel blade and a polished bronze handle inlaid with richly-colored mother-of-pearl. The pommel has been cast to have the face of a Classical-style youth surrounded by a laurel wreath on its flatter sides, and with lion heads projecting from its wider sides. One of the lion's heads flows down into the brace, which has a Classical-style floral decoration. The guard dips down in the form of a seashell, cast to give it ridged and scalloped details, on one side only; the guard is almost nonexistent (purposefully) on the other side, giving it an interesting, and rare, asymmetrical form. This type of sword is sometimes known as a spadroon, a light sword (also called a small sword) with a straight blade. The spadroon became popular in the 1790s with military officers in England, and it quickly spread to France and the United States. Size: 4" W x 35.5" H (10.2 cm x 90.2 cm)
Provenance: private Kavet collection, Massachusetts, USA
