Description
The Orations of Demosthenes on Occasions of Public Deliberation - Thomas Leland translator
Demosthenes (384-322 BC) Greek statesman and orator of ancient Athens. His orations provide an insight into the politics and culture of Athens during the 4th century BC.
Thomas Leland (1722-1785) Irish historian, translator and author.
Longman was a publishing company founded by Thomas Longman (1699 - 18 June 1755) in London, England, in 1724. In 1754, Longman made his nephew a partner, Thomas Longman (1730-1797), and the title of the firm became T. and T. Longman. Upon the death of his uncle in 1755, Longman became sole proprietor. This handsome set was published during the nephew's tenure under the T. Longman imprint.
These three volumes came from the library of noted arts patron Julian Wood Glass, Jr. This is the complete 3-volume (349, 277 + 336 pages) T. Longman (London) Third Edition 1777 publication of Thomas Leland’s translation of The Orations of Demosthenes on Occasions of Public Deliberation.
Demosthenes (384-322 B.C.) is generally considered the most accomplished of the Greek orators, though his oratorical attempts to rally his fellow
Athenians against Philip II of Macedonia’s push to unite Greece under his rule, was unsuccessful, as was Demosthenes resistance to Philips’ son, Alexander the Great. Antipater, Alexander’s successor, not wanting a continuation of this resistance, sent his subordinates after Demosthenes, who committed suicide rather than face capture.
This set belonged to the arts patron, and founder of what was to become the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Julian Wood Glass, Jr. His bookplate (Emergo - Glass) is attached to each of the front inside covers.
There are no additional stamps, or other attachments. There are a few pencil notations, but no ink or other indelible writings. The covers (5.5" x 8.375"), full calf with gilt lettering in red backgrounds, gilt decoration to the spine, are in very good condition, with minor scuffs and shallow edge wear, but with all spines straight and securely attached.
There is only one stain of note - a roughly circular outline (about 1") to the front cover of Volume III, with little change in background color. The insides are very good. There are occasional spot stains or foxed areas. None of these is prominent. The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages. There are no tears and few creases, none of which are prominent. There are no illustrations in this set. All the type is unfaded, clean and legible.
The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the conditions.
