Description
(Massachusetts/England, 1834-1903)
The Storm, 1861, state III/III (cancelled), signed in plate "Whistler 1861", drypoint etching on Japan paper, 6-1/8 x 11-1/4 in; gilt wood frame, 17-7/8 x 21-1/2 in.
Note:This etching was made by Whistler while on a camping trip. One can identify with the quick method in which it seems to be achieved as a lone figure appears to be in need of shelter due to an on-coming storm.
The plate was cancelled in 1879, bought by the Fine Art Society in an auction known as the 'Whistler bankruptcy auction', they were published in 1880. This impression has the cancellation lines worked out. According to Kennedy, there are only four know impressions prior to cancellation.
Literature: Kennedy, Edward G. [The Etched Work of Whistler]. San Francisco: Alan Wolfsy, 1978, no. 81, ill.
Condition
restored complex tear into plate from top margin into central clouds, hinged in, toning in margins, some small losses at edges, stains from hinging tape; frame with abrasions
