The
Chateau Mouton Rothschild is the "granddaddy" of fine art labels,
starting a tradition that has blossomed in the last two decades. The
150-year-old Gundlach Bundschu Winery in California's Sonoma Valley has
been doing unique art series labels for their top-tier Vintage Reserve
line since 1981. Their ambitious Millennium Series (1997-2003 vintages)
featured a timeline of eras in the history of wine, from terra cotta
wine pots in early civilization, a Mesopotamian mosaic, an Egyptian tomb
painting, a fresco preserved by Mount Vesuvius' eruption, a Dali homage
to Johannes Vermeer, and ending with a landscape by Gracie Bundschu,
great-great-granddaughter of the winery's founder
In the '40s,
'50s, and '60s, Baron Philippe de Rothschild kept asking Pablo Picasso
to contribute a piece of artwork for the label of his Chateau Mouton
Rothschild wine from the Bordeaux region of France. Every year since
1945, the labels had featured a painting or sculpture by a famous artist
of the day, including Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, and Marc Chagall,
but Picasso refused. When Picasso died in 1973, Baron Philippe received
permission from Picasso's daughter Paloma to feature a painting,
"Bacchanale," that was owned by the Mouton Museum on the label "en
Hommage a Picasso (1881-1973).
