Hansegger, born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, was a unique figure in 20th century art, working at the highest level in most of the major movements of the century. “He is one of the few great portrait-painters of the 20th century” – the late famous art critic W. Heider. Hans painted many great people of the 20th century; Pablo Picasso, Sigmund Freud, Albert Schweitzer, Professor D.T. Suzuki of Columbia University ( Zen Master), Toscanini and while at Princeton University he was commissioned to do a portrait of Prof. Albert Einstein. Just to name a few. Hans knew his subjects and connected with them intellectually. This etching believed to be his first wife is an outstanding example of his intention to emphasize the strong characteristics of the sitter. He centers attention on the eyes.
