Description
An Italian silk embroidery from the George Seligman Collection, featuring the Crucifixion of Christ as the central theme surrounded by an ornate gold scrolled thread applied to a green textile - the title a the top of the embroidery, also in gold thread, reads: "CRUX- SPESMUNDI" (The Cross - Hope of the World). Note the hand written inscription on reverse in newer blue ink that appears to read "Collection Georges Seligman expositon au Victoria and Albert Museum / Italie XVIeme siecle" (Italy 16th century). Size xxx. Provenance: From a private collection of Country Americana and fine Decorative Arts of a retiring local attorney, downsizing and moving to smaller quarters.
