The tale is thought to originate from the 1300s in Iceland had went through dozens of editions and languages through the 19th-century. Esaias Tegner’s Swedish paraphrase in poetic form was popular throughout Europe in the 1820s.
This late 19th-century American edition was translated out of the original Swedish into English by Thomas A.E. & Martha Holcomb.
