Description
18th CENTURY RARE RUSSIAN ICON VIRGIN - O ALL-HYMNED MOTHER OF GOD (OVSEPETAYA VIRGIN).
Hand painted with egg tempera. Gesso on wood panel. Kovcheg ( raised borders).
Size: 12 by 14".
Russian Icon of the O All - Hymned Mother of God. The history of this Icon is not known. The type, however, is popular and the image is interesting. The Mother of God is shown with the Christ Child. In place of the usual simple stars on her head and shoulders she is given three circles containing faces often resembling those of the anthropomorphized winds on old maps. They appear to be Angels, stars represented (as in the Book of Enoch) as intelligent beings (these are found also in the Gora Nerudosechnaya and Molchanskaya types, but in those the Mother of God holds a ladder). Some see them as the Trinity. Her head-covering is edged with a wide band containing, in Slavonic lettering, Kontakion Thirteen from the Akathist Canon: "O All-Hymned Mother (O Vsepyetaya Mati) bearer of the holiest of holies Work, accept what we offer now, deliver us all from every attach, and deliver from the coming torment all those who cry to you.
Authenticity guaranteed. Certificate of the Authenticity available upon request of the buyer.
