Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada), Inuit, ca. 20th century CE. An intriguing painted face mask, hand-carved from lightweight wood. Carved out on the verso, this mask presents a striking countenance comprised of not one but three separate faces. The primary face is defined by rosy cheeks, slender ovoid eyes, a tall nose with slit-form nostrils, and a thin mouth. Two pairs of white-painted eyes are situated both above and below the carved slits, with a third separate face resting between the arching eye brows. The mask is painted in a grey-green pigment with areas of white, blue, and red brightening the overall appearance. An interesting and unusual example indeed!
