Condition: Good to Very Good estate fresh to the market, having bright vivid colors. Painting surface has normal aged craquelure. Canvas size measures 27.5" x 35.5", Frame size measures 30" x 38". Provenance: Direct from the artist; thence by descent though the family to the present owner. Schnitzler emigrated to the U.S. at the start of WWII. Max had the honor to study with Hans Hoffman, Leger and L'hote in the 1930's. and eventually developed into one of America's first abstract expressionist artists. During the mid 1930's, he worked and shared studios with Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollack, and Bill & Elaine De Kooning among others. Mr. Schnitzler was a WPA painter & a member of the "New York abstract expressionist school". Paintings by Max Schnitzler are held in permanent collection of the New York City Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Cincinnati Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Fine Art, and the Denver Art Museum.
