A PAIR OF ANTIQUE CROWN DEVON FIELDINGS HAND PAINTED VASE LAMPS, "HIGHLAND CATTLE," SIGNED "G. COX," OVERGLAZE MARKS, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, each of ovoid form with sides centering two bulls grazing on hillside grasses before a distant mountainous terrain and continuing on reverse, in natural colors and signed "G. Cox," surmounted by a fluted neck with stylized ruyi banding and a leaf tip detailed rim flanked by reticulated scrolling handles, raised on a similarly decorated conforming foot, enclosing an underside with a brown overglaze crown within, "CROWN DEVON / FIELDINGS / STOKE ON TRENT / ENGLAND," fitted for electricity. Height: 14" Width: 7" Depth: 6" NOTE: Founded by Simon Fielding in the 1870's and originally named the Railway Works, located on Sutherland St., Stoke on Trent. After a few years, Fielding was having severe monetary difficulties when his son Abraham stepped in and rescued the company from financial ruin. Increased production as well as expansion of various painted earthenware and majolica wares led to the company's success. By 1912, the Railway Works name was changed to The Devon Pottery and Fielding began the popular Crown Devon label. Production continued until 1982 when the company was forced to close its doors.
