Description
Polychrome wood Assumption of the Virgin, South Germany, 18th century. The standing Virgin, her hands clasped in prayer, faces forward, her long golden hair centrally parted & falling around her shoulders. Her voluminous cloak, fastened on her bosom, billows out around her. She is borne aloft by three curly headed cherubs rising form the Orb around which a long dolphin twines, supported on a round molded base. Traces of blue, red, green, and flesh colored paint, with gilt. The base possibly a later edition (figure is loose from base). 12" tall.
