Set of 4 Pieces Antique Chinese Southern Officer Arm Chairs. Each has a curved, hoofed crest rail in bamboo motif, supported on an S-shaped splat and elegantly curved rear posts, which continue to form the rear legs. The curved arm rails are supported on elegant, curved spindles and tapering vertical stiles and extend beyond the front posts, which continue through the rectangular frame and form the front legs. The rectangular frame encloses the S-shaped splat, open-works carved with a PiXiu within ruyi shaped medallion, above middle back splat in Qilin motif, elevated from the hard mat seat upon bamboo shaped aprons and spandrels. The frontal apron follows the anterior edge making an inverse pattern of the backrest. A rectilinear frame encloses the mat seat. The legs are joined by stepped stretchers and a footrest connects the front pilings. The HuangHuaLi wood is dense and has been expertly polished to give a glinting sheen as the light hits the surface. Some grain structures may be likened to the shape of ghost faces.
