Item Details
Description
Staffordshire Earthenware Blue Willow Platter, Early 19th Century. Measures 13.5 x 11.5 x 1.25". Weight 3 pds. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate. The Blue Willow pattern was designed by Thomas Minton in 1780 and was intended to add a touch of Oriental magic to mass produced earthenware. Asian motifs were popular throughout the 18th and 19th century due to the import of Chinese china. The Willow Pattern itself illustrates a Chinese legend of a down market boy who elopes with upmarket girl and they end up being transformed into a pair of doves, the main elements of the story are laid out within the ornate pattern, including the willow tree. Chinese designs were the rage in Britain at the end of the 18th century and early 19th century thanks to the Prince Regent's lavish oriental inspired "Brighton Pavilion" which was designed by John Nash in 1815.
