Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Ancient Near East, Sasanian (Sassanian or Sasanid) Empire, ca. 5th century CE. A lovely cast-bronze ladle with a long, slender handle, a thick neck, and a deep scoop with dozens of small perforations. Employed during ceremonial events, this type of ladle would scoop out larger bits of fruit and other flavoring materials before the wine was served. The ancient Greeks used similar strainers like this for hundreds of years, and use of such tools continued on into Islamic times. Areas of thick green patina coat most of the scoop and handle, though some areas of bright golden bronze are exposed. Size: 4.9" W x 16.5" H (12.4 cm x 41.9 cm).

Provenance: private California, USA collection
