Description
Cheaspeake Bay Log Canoe Margaret P. Hall , 1893 Print /Stampby Melbourne Smith . Size: 11 x 14 Frame size 13 x 17.Log Canoe Racing has been a popular sporting event on the Chesapeake Bay since the mid l9th-Century. Log canoes are so named because their bottoms were fashioned from logs hewn to shape and fastened together. Originally built for oyster tonging, they evolved into racing machines in the 1880s with huge spreads of canvas and 12' to 16' springboards on which crews climb out to windward to keep the boats from capsizing. The 32 foot log canoe Margaret P. Hall was hewn from five logs in 1893 by Charles Tarr, St. Michaels, Maryland. This beautifully detailed and colorful print by Smith is part of a series done for the International Historical Watercraft Collection over thirty years ago. It is in a 13"x17" wood frame, protected by glass and is ready to hang .
