Description
This double inkwell or inkstand appears to be gilded silverplate. No maker's marks. It is inscribed: Presented to Mr. Thos Hamilton Fox by the Employes [sic] at Oak Brewery Farnborough Kent 15 Feb 1873 It is beautifully engraved and has four faces or masks on each side, and what appear to be four octopus figures on each corner of the base. It is missing a decorative piece which would have fit into the center upright section. There are some chips on the heavy hobnail crystal inkwells, but they are clearly original to the inkstand and fit perfectly. The lids are not loose. There is some discoloration inside the lids which may be dried ink. Thomas Hamilton Fox was a brewery and tavern owner in the South of England during the Victorian era. Fox's wife Valentine, opened the Fox home, Hollydale, to her friends W. B. Yeats and Olivia Shakespeare who carried on their trysts there. https://bit.ly/2QxGji0 (link to Yeats Annual with extensive information on the Fox connection) 7-1/8" by 11-1/8" by 6" high
