Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A fierce, mold-made pottery vessel of a seated human figure with the head of a jaguar. The jaguar has his large ears perked upwards, large eyes, and his mouth in a fierce snarl. The human body below it is seated with legs crossed, and hands on the knees. A stirrup spout rises from his back, terminating in a high, conical spout. The jaguar was a symbol of power and kingship throughout the pre-Columbian New World; for the Moche and others, it symbolized a fierceness as well as an individuality that they identified with leaders in their society. Spout is repaired and restored, with overpainting on the restored areas. The mouth has also been repaired. Very nice remaining pigment.
