19th C Signed Brown patina Bronze Sculpture Of Seated Hermes, illegibly signed on back. Seated Male Nude Figural, Nude Bronze Sculpture, Male Figure Sculpture, A Replica Of Seated Hermes" (Resting Hermes), is one of the bronze sculptures discovered in the garden of the Villa of the Papyri. It portrays Hermes, a Roman messenger God, seated and looking down and wearing a pair of Talaria (winged sandals), sculpture was recognized as an imitation of an original Greek sculpture made a couple of centuries prior, and was found in 1758. It is probably the most celebrated work of art discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii in the eighteenth century and is currently kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Measures approx 22 inches tall x 20 inches long x 12 inches wide. Minor surface scratches to patina. Bronze sculpture.
