Description
1864 CONFEDERATE 1st London ed Bertrand du Guesclin US CIVIL WAR Confederacy Jamison
An interesting, and quite obscure, first edition printing of David Flavel Jamison’s ‘Life and Times of Bertrand Du Guesclin’. While on the surface, this book appears to be a classic 19th-century biographical work, like so many before and after; however, this work is unique in that was printed in London with the a Confederate imprint of ‘Charleston, John Russell.’ Jamison completed this work in 1863 and, knowing it would not be published in a beautiful manner in the Confederacy, sent his manuscript to London to be printed. Published in two volumes in 1864, during the American Civil War, this work was notably blocked by a Federal blockade runner and crates of them were offloaded into the Bahamas and not available in the United States.
This particular example was published in London, as it bears both the London ‘Trubner’ imprint as well as the Charleston imprint. In this book, Jamison tells of the life of the 14th-century French military commander, Bertrand du Guesclin, and his role in the Hundred Years’ War.
