Item Details

Description

A rare carved wooden Yaka peoples fetish figure known as "Phuungu" with layered and encrusted surface patina suggesting genuine age and ritual use. Such figures served as containers for protective magical power exercised by the experts against illness, to avenge sorcery and for supernatural assistance in hunting. Please note the multiple layers of organic matter, fetish bundles and applications of sacrificial matter. The statue has a stress fracture on one side that was filled long ago with an old textile.Repair to one leg by earlier collector. Custom mounted.Yaka peoples, Congo, West Africa.The sculpture measures 18.5 inches tall on metal base.
