Description
Northern Europe, Anglo-Saxon or possibly other Germanic culture, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A pair of interesting forged-iron oil-burning lamps, each with an openwork topside, a boat-shaped body, along, curved handle, and a slightly-narrowed wick spout. Lamps like these examples would be filled with naturally-occurring oils or liquified animal tallow and have a thick wick placed inside to soak up the combustible substance. Once sufficiently saturated, the end of the wick would be lit to provide light for its owner. Size of one: 9.5" W x 3.75" H (24.1 cm x 9.5 cm); 10.45" H (26.5 cm) on included custom stand.
