The painting is 21" x 28", in a frame 30" x 37".///////////////////////////////Jean Marzelle , born on January 24 , 1916 at Lauzun ( Lot-et-Garonne ) and died on August 11 , 2005 , is a French painter.]Attracted, very young by painting, and thanks to his regular visits to the Fabre Museum in Montpellier , the young Marzelle tries to paint by copying the masters, notably Eugène Delacroix . He entered the School of Fine Arts in Montpellier in the drawing class. During the holidays, he goes to Lauzun with his grandparents where he continues to paint in nature.In 1934 , he participated in the exhibition organized by the Society of Painters of Herault . The following year, he went to Paris and shared a workshop, 85 rue Mouffetard , with painter friends like him. Marzelle enrolls at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and is admitted to the entry contest said galleries, so it can draw from the ancient sculptures. He took advantage of his stay in Paris to regularly visit the Louvre and discover the paintings of the Impressionists .In 1936 , he moved and set up his studio at Montparnasse , 6 rue Huyghens where he stayed for a short time because he later moved to rue Antoine-Bourdelle . That same year, the Cézanne retrospective organized at the Tuileries ' Orangery turned him upside down and he said: "Now I have understood what real painting is" . He continues his work as copyist of the masters.During the Second World War , after his return from Lauzun, he discovered that his Paris studio was looted in his absence and regret the loss of his pointillist essays. In 1942 , he shows his work to the painter François Desnoyer . The latter encourages him to continue and hires him to assist him in the realization of a large decoration for the Mayor of Cachan , A Sunday in the Paris suburbs . The working group includes André Fougeron , Merle and Vaffier . Jacques Villon visits them as well as Charles Walch with whom he will become a friend. On October 17, 1942, he married Hélène Chatel and taught art history and decoration at the Estienne School Professional Center, a position obtained thanks to his friend Jean Cluseau - Lanauve . Desnoyer invites him to participate in the exhibition Masters and Youth , gallery Berri-Raspail. It is also his first participation in the Salon d'automne and becomes a member. His shipment is noticed by the critic Gaston Diehl . In 1943 , Marzelle was entitled to her first personal exhibition, Galerie Pittoresque, held by Simone Camin who became the second wife of André Lhote . His friends from Cachan introduce Maurice Esteve , Alfred Manessier and Leon Gischia . But the most important meeting is with Camille Renault , restaurateur, art dealer and patron of artists based in Puteaux .In 1945 , the Denise René gallery presents Histoire d'un tableau, an exhibition with Burtin , Georges Dayez , Roger Eskenazi and Marzelle. That same year, Marzelle received the Bernheim Prize at the Salon d'Automne. The following year, Marzelle returned to study and copying masters, destroyed works and was appointed professor at the City of Paris ; birth of his daughter Catherine.In 1949 , Marzelle moved to the region of Aix-en-Provence in the property called "La Grande Thumine", near the Sainte-Victoire mountain .In 1951 , his son François was born. In 1952 , Marzelle discovered Spain ( Madrid , Segovia , Avila and Toledo ). He resumes his job as a copyist at the Prado ( Francisco de Goya , El Greco , Diego Velazquez ). In 1953 , a major exhibition at the Marcel Guiot Gallery in Paris, the preface to the catalog is by Jean Bouret . The New York Modern Gallery presents Marzelle for the first time in the United States , thanks to her director, Jeanine Wolkenberg . Marzelle wins a prize at the Biennale de Menton .In 1954 , in collaboration with Georges Dayez and Marcel Mouly , Marzelle created a mosaic decoration for the French Lycée in Lisbon . In 1955 , the gallery Charpentier presents "Discover", where Marzelle exposes the Man in front of Toledo . The year 1957 saw him win the Critics' Prize and a prize at the Fourth Biennial of Menton.In 1959 , Marzelle leaves her Paris studio for Gentilly . In 1960 , he discovered Holland , and the port of Hoorn , on the advice of his dealer Marcel Guiot.In 1964 , he illustrated the Letters to a Friend of Paul Verlaine , published under the title Fifteen Days in Holland . Each letter is illustrated with a color aquatint , engraved on copper by Marzelle. In 1970 , Jean Marzelle became the first laureate of the International Portrait Prize founded by Paul-Louis Weiller . He created a mural, La Seine , for the college of Bihorel-les-Rouen and a mosaic for the CES de Villeurbanne , The Trojan Horse .The first trip to Guadeloupe took place in 1974 with a view to creating a mosaic for the Raizet aux Abymes school . During the stay, he made many drawings and works on paper that will be the subject of an exhibition the following year at the gallery Guiot. In 1976 , Marzelle made a mosaic for the Tax Center of the 17th arrondissement of Paris , Paysage de Guadeloupe . In 1977 , he went to Pointe-à-Pitre , to make a mosaic at the Baimbridge High School.In 1978 , the city of Gentilly commissioned the mosaic portrait of Victor Hugo to adorn the facade of the school group Victor Hugo. In 1982 , on the occasion of the inauguration of the Jean-Pierre Joubert Gallery, a personal exhibition was dedicated to him; Bernard Dorival writes the preface to the catalog. In 1992 , a monograph of Marzelle, written by Jean-Louis Bruch, appears in the collection "Terre des peintres".Jean Marzelle dies on August 11 , 2005 . Since his death, three solo exhibitions have been dedicated to him: in 2006 in Gentilly , in 2008 in conjunction with the Joubert gallery and the Bernheim-Jeune gallery, and in 2013 at the Mairie du 6e arrondissement in Paris."
