This is the Thomas H. Ford (Washington) 1860 printing of "Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean", made under the direction of the Secretary of War in 1853-5 (358 numbered body pages, plus 41 appendix pages). The marbled boards are loose. The leather outside surface at the spine is missing. The first and last few (blank) end pages are attached to their boards. The binding is otherwise secure, with no other loose and no missing pages. There is recurrent foxing, more notably to the borders of and pages adjacent to many illustrations, but also on a number of text pages. Most text pages have no notable foxing, and no text is obscured or illegible as a result of any foxing or other stains. The 70 colored illustrations are in very good condition overall, with, other than the foxing, no significant flaws. There are no stamps or other attachments. There is no writing. There are few creases. The very large (62.5" x 26") 10 horizontal panel fold out illustration at the end of the book, of the crossing between the Milk River and the Columbia River, is attached (to the detached end pages) and in excellent condition.
