Cast Bronze Plaque of Abraham Lincoln by Jules E. Roine
c. 1909, Commemorative Cast Bronze 7" Round Plaque of Abraham Lincoln, by Jules douard Roin, Sc. (French-American 1857-1916), After Victor David Brenner, Choice Near Mint.
This decorative Commemorative Bronze Plaque measures 7" in diameter. The front shows a handsome bearded bust of Lincoln, as seen on the 1909 United States Lincoln Penny, the obverse or heads side was designed by Victor David Brenner. facing right within a plain field. It is Signed and Stamped near the lower edge on the right hand side at the 5 o'clock position: "JEROINE/ GORHAM CO". Its reverse side has screws with wire for hanging on display. Right edge stamped "O176" and left side stamped "P 1669". The first example we have offered.
Jules douard Roin, Sc. (French-American 1857-1916) was born in Nantes, France. Pupil of Leopold Maurice and of Chantrou. Roin came to America in 1881, and returned to France in 1898, where he exhibited in the Paris Salon, receiving mention; the following year he was awarded the first medal at the Paris Exposition. Back in New York, he applied his trade as a sculptor and medalist and was an active member of the New York City circle of sculptors, where he met countrymen and brothers Henri and Felix Weil.

In 1908, Roin exhibited medals at the National Academy of Design New York winter show. That same year, he and Felix Weil formed the RoinWeil Company. Their output for the following year was enormous. Not only was it the New York City celebration for Hudson-Fulton, it was also the centennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. The pair kept busy providing models and patterns for both these medallic functions to medal manufacturers, including the infant Medallic Art Company (headed by Felix's brother Henry Wein), Whitehead & Hoag in Newark, and Gorham & Company. In 1910, Roin exhibited twenty-eight items at the American Numismatic Society's Exhibition of Contemporary Medallic Art, nineteen of which were galvano casts. The others were only a portion of the fifteen known struck medals he had created prior to this time.

The Roin, Weil Company specialized in bas-reliefs and galvano creations, but also prepared models and designed medallic items as well. Roin dissolved the partnership with Weil after becoming ill with Bright's disease and he returned to France 1915, where he died a year later on April 11, 1916. Roin was a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society. He is probably best known for his Lincoln portrait designed for the 1909 Lincoln Centennial Medal.
