Description
Antique wall charger. Hammered Repousse embossed decorations, on silver alloy base or a thick Silver lining hammered onto the brass sheet base. Lavish border ornamentation and alternating cartouches with Fleur-de-lis patterns, encircle a period portrait of French king Louis XVI (1754-1793). He was later re-named by the revolutionaries to "Le citizen Louis Capet" in reference to his proto-ancestor Hugh Capet (c.941-996 AD), the founder of Capetian dynasty. Louis XVI was the only King of France ever to be executed, and his death brought an end to more than a thousand years of continuous French monarchy. French, pre-Revolutionary (i.e. before 1789).
