Book Details: This antique volume is bound in brown stamped cloth-covered boards featuring a gilt debossed image of a hippopotamus on the front board and a rhinoceros on the rear board. The work is adorned with an illustrated frontispiece of African wildlife as well as numerous other plates and in-text illustrations. From the Preface: "The following Narrative of Explorations and Discoveries during four years in the wilds of the southwestern parts of Africa contains the account of two expeditions in that continent between the years 1850 and 1854. In the first of these journeys, the countries of the Damaras (previously all but unknown in Europe) and of the Ovambo (till now a terra incongnita) were explored; in the second, the newly-discovered Lake Ngami was reached by a route that had always been deemed impractical."
Condition / Notes: This decoratively bound antique volume displays some typical indications of age and wear including shelfwear and rubbing to high points. The spine is cracked and separated from the text block, however the piece is laid in. The text block is slightly cracked, yet the binding remains sound. Text and illustrations are clear and legible through mild age toning/foxing. There is writing by a previous owner to the front pastedown.
