Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A lovely mold-formed terracotta oil lamp with a circular base, round walls, a recessed tondo with a small fill hole, and a large wick spout with two projecting lateral points. Within the tondo is a low relief image of a peacock standing with bent legs on a fruit-laden branch, its plumage retracted against its body and its head facing to the right. Covered in vibrant orange slip, this is a fabulous example of utilitarian Roman pottery! Size: 3.8" L x 2.7" W x 1" H (9.7 cm x 6.9 cm x 2.5 cm).

Minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, and wick spout, with softening to low relief details within tondo, fading to slip coloration, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
