Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Eastern Europe / Western Asia, Georgia, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of repousse silver shields, seemingly made to hang next to one another, each depicting a standing peacock set into a border of vines. They are not identical; side-by-side, the peacocks face each other. Incised inscriptions that appear to be in Georgian are on raised scrolls beneath the peacocks' feet and above their full plumage. From the earliest decorative art in central Asia, we know that the peacock has been associated with the sun, linked with beauty, glory, immortality, and wisdom; this iconography spread from India outward to Babylonia, Persia, and Asia Minor. Size of each: 4.85" W x 6.05" H (12.3 cm x 15.4 cm); total weight of both is: 133.2 grams
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
