Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Maya, Late Classic period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A small yet stunning bead, hand-carved from gorgeous apple-green jade with beige inclusions, depicting an abstract anthropomorphic head. The head faces left with closed coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose in front, and a thin mouth beneath. A thin cap rests atop the wide brow with a segmented lappet draped down the right side. A pair of drilled holes on the verso allow for suspension, though one can observe where the artisan miscalculated with the first hole and drilled out the back of the head rather than directly through the opposite lateral side. An attractive example of fine Mayan jade-carving technique! Size: 1" W x 0.9" H (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm).
Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
