Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery jar depicting a squatting anthropomorphic figure. The rounded base boasts a pair of low-relief legs bent beneath a rotund body decorated in black pigment with a thin, segmented belt encircling the midsection. Applied arms are raised towards a minimalist visage defined by raised almond-shaped eyes with painted bottom lashes, a slender nose, pursed lips, and cupped ears, all beneath a wide brow and a cylindrical cap which doubles as the spout/rim. The effigy is further embellished with a headband detailed in horizontal V-shaped motifs which trace around the head to a small cape just beneath an applied loop handle on the verso. Condition
Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to base, arms, handle, and head, with chipping and fading to some areas of pigmentation, and light roughness across most surfaces. Light earthen deposits and light mineral deposits throughout.
