Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sissano, ca. 1960s CE. A large wooden paddle with intricately carved motifs on the paddle face and the handle. Brightly colored Western trade paint has been added to the surface. The face of the paddle is divided into quadrants, with abstract scrollwork motifs; the handle has a very abstract anthropomorphic motif. The Sissano lagoon is a fertile source of sea food for coastal villages all along the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. Fishing and canoes are understandably incredibly important parts of the local lifestyle. Size: 7.85" W x 59.25" H (19.9 cm x 150.5 cm); 61" H (154.9 cm) on included custom stand.
