Description
Rare plate, made for serving Amieux Freres sardines. Hand painted over transfer decoration with sardine fish forming a square in relief. A lighthouse on the left side, fishing ship on the right, and a figural scene with a musician playing a woodwind instrument to children dancing in the lower margin. Bordered by text in ribbons: LES VRAIES SARDINES AMIEUX FRERES and PORTENT LA DEVISE : TOUJOURS, MIEUX.The sardines would come in a characteristic square-shape can, which would fit perfectly into the borders made by the molded Sardine fish shapes. Inside the square is a poem, in French. This promotional verse was in use during the period circa 1890-1910.The brand was founded in 1879.Marked in the back with a list of other gastronomy specialties supplied by Amieux Freres. There are also some incised marks by the producer, hard to make out. Measurements: Approx. 9.25" diameter, 1" deep
