Description
486. JAMES MADISON (1751-1836). Fourth President of the United States (1809-17) known as the father of the Constitution and sponsor of the Bill of Rights; Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson (1801-09). Partly printed document, 1p on vellum, 10"x15¾", Washington, DC, Jul 2, 1810. Ship's Passport with scalloped top edge and two large maritime engravings at top margin. Paper and wax seal present. Authorizing the "Ship Eleanor, Thomas Kenepton master or commander of the burthen of One hundred and sixty four...tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with nine men" carrying United Citizens to pass unharmed. Boldly signed by Madison and Secretary of State ROBERT S. SMITH (1757-1842), who preceded James Monroe in that office. He had earlier served as Attorney General and Secretary of the Navy in the Jefferson Administration.
