Description
Antique wooden headrest or pillow, known as Taka-Makura. Used to support the head raised during sleep, most often by Geishas to protect their intricate hairstyle. During training, young Geishas underwent rigorous training to avoid their hair touching the ground during sleep - wet rice would be spread on the floor around the Taka-Makura pillow by the elders, and would stick to their hair if it comes into contact. All handcrafted from native fruit-wood. Note the all-wood joints - no adhesive or fasteners and nails used. Japanese in origin, 19th century - late Edo or Early Meiji period. Measurements: Approx. 10" x 3" x 4.5" high | See our special $5 starting bid lots at the end of this auction! No Reserve, No Buyer's Premium!
