**Originally Listed At $300**
Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A cast bronze bust depicting the head, shoulders, and lower headdress of the goddess Sekhmet (occasionally Sakhmet). She is always depicted as a fierce lioness, as she is here, with a long snout and deepset eyes. Her headdress projects upward (it would once have had a sun disc atop it) and has two long strands indicating a wig that here fall onto her shoulders. The form of her headdress is similar to that depicted on the granodiorite bust at the Brooklyn Museum (1991.311). Sekhmet's name means "the powerful one" and she was seen as a strong protector of the pharaohs who was also a warrior goddess and could lead them in warfare. Size: 1.45" W x 1.95" H (3.7 cm x 5 cm); 3.4" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Florida, USA collection acquired before 1990
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

Condition
Piece is a fragment from a larger statue and its lower edges are uneven from an ancient break. Figure also probably once had a large sun disk attached to the headdress, but the break where it is lost is ancient. Pretty mottled light and dark green patina.
