Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A rice basket, comprised of two halves woven from reeds and bound in leather strips around the peripheries, with a thin leather strip with quadrilateral and linear patterns linking both halves together. One half displays either natural beige or dyed-russet reeds on both exterior and interior; the second half has similar reed weaving on the interior, but features a red-and-black-dyed leather covering with an eleven-pointed star motif and a circular central design. Secured by and decorated with thin brown leather strips, both halves also have a slatted leather strip and a ball meant for securing both halves together. Used to separate rice kernels from other plant material and for transportation, rice baskets have been a staple in agricultural communities throughout Southeast Asia for centuries. Size: 14.5" W x 5.5" H (36.8 cm x 14 cm).

Repaired in two areas with cloth and leather panels. Minor loosening and loss to fibers, wear and loss to leather peripheries and binding strands, and fading to pigmentation throughout.
