**Originally Listed At $6000**
Pre-Columbian, South America, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. This Andean textile is composed of wool from alpaca or llama, and cotton dyed with natural pigments that have retained their vibrant hues over the past thousand years. Its fine condition is most likely attributed to the dry conditions of the Andes and protection from the region's sunlight. The composition consists of longitudinal panels of nested profiled birds delineated with their characteristic beaks and tails alternating with rich brown panels. Avian iconography was particularly favored by the ancient Peruvians. Birds in general were associated with celestial journeys of shamans and priests who underwent ceremonial rituals with the intent of transforming themselves into eagles, coastal birds, owls, and other revered birds. Size: 64.75" L x 48" W (164.5 cm x 121.9 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private Swiss collection acquired at auction in Paris before 2000.
